AMAZING MOMENT: Durbar festival in Ilorin, Kwara State.

A Durbar festival is celebrated yearly in Ilorin and several cities of Nigeria. This ocassion is used to celebrate the end of Ramadan and is also celebrated within the month of eid el Kabir and eid el Fitri, which marks the Muslim holidays.



It is usually commenced with holy prayers, which a parade of the Emir and his entourage on horses will follow, together with popular performances, and concluded at the Emir's palace. Durbar in various cities are considered as tourist attractions.




Durbar festival came into existence in Nigeria through the colonial masters with the aim to share their political experience with them. Queen Victoria was proclaimed as India colonial's empress in the year 1877. The word Durbar is formed by the ceremony which was linked to the Persian origin.















Formerly, the events in Nigeria were ceremonial in nature, the first Durbar was performed in 1911, consecutives ones were held in 1924, 1925, 1948, 1960 and 1972. The ceremonies connected pre-colonial aspects of horse ride display, colonist created gatherings and celebrations of important events in Northern Nigeria.

Osun Osogbo is a sacred wilderness along the river banks located in Osogbo town of Osun State, Nigeria.

Osun Osgogbo festival is celebrated once a year, around August at the forest/ shrine arena. Once a year, the festival calls the attention of various tribes both home and abroad. Diverse of worshippers, spectators and tourists come to the river (Osun Osogbo) to request for whatever they need with a certain promise(s) and the subsequent will come to offer praises with their promise(s) at the shrine.

The eight month of the year is always a special festival period in Osogbo Land, traditional atonement of the city and cultural engagement of the people with their founders and priests of the Osogbo Kingdom.

Osun Osogbo is well recognized by most people in Nigeria and it is a day where lots of special personalities come across the nation to celebrate. Below are some of the special guest of the occasion.







The Osun Osogbo festival has being in existence for over than 700 years ago. History has it that this festival was as a result of a certain ancestral occurrence. Longtime ago, a group of people migrated by the leadership of a great hunter by the name Olutimehin. They settle by the bank of Osun river, to rescue their people from famine. At the river side, Yeye Oluweri Magbojo (the goddess of the river) usually appear to Olutimehin and will ordered him to direct people to a specific area (the new Osogbo town). The goddess protect all the people and prosper them and their crafts as promised in return for a yearly sacrifice to her. It was approved by the people.

The Arugba is a virgin lady who will carry a sacrificial calabash. This calabash can only be taken across the town by a virgin lady because is sacred and it's a taboo for non-virgin to carry it. The lady will carry the calabash to different places in the town.

This is the dog that was sacrificed to gods on the platform of sandy stone, indicating that the dog was sacrificed to Satan. As you can see beside it is palm wine and other ingredients used in honoring Esu Lalu Ogiri Oko (Devil) in Yoruba land

Isin is among the Local Governments in Kwara State, Nigeria. Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State was created from the aged Irepodun Local Government Area in the year 1996 with its base at Owu-Isin.

Agba Isin is among several towns and communities like Iwo, Oke-Onigbin, Kudu-Owode, Isanlu Isin, Ijara isin, Owu isin, Oke-Aba, Edidi, Odo-Eku, Eleyin, Oba, Iji, Pamo, Oponda, Igbesi and others to the north-side, east-side and its west-coast.

Isin people are part of Igbominas. Though, their tonation is of Isin which is not as fluent as the Yoruba Language. As one of the YorubaLand, Isin also hails from the old Oyo township and as well Ile-Ife.

The name 'Isin' is coiled from the activities perfromed under a tree called (Akeapple tree) . They also have a game whereby two kings from neighboouring villages will come at a center and throw Pounded Yam at each as a symbol of cordial relationship.
